Atletico Madrid shot-stopper Jan Oblak has been named the LaLiga player of the season 2020-21 for his brilliant performances with the Spanish league champions. The Slovenian national has been a vital cog for Atletico Madrid in the 20-21 campaign making crucial saves, helping Diego Simeone’s men edge out league rivals and neighbours Real Madrid to win the coveted LaLiga title.
Former FC Barcelona striker Luis Suarez helped the Rojiblancos on their way to the title by being their highest scorer this season and also scoring in a 2-1 win against Valladolid on the last day of the season to protect a 2-point lead over arch-rivals Real Madrid. Suarez managed to find the net 21 times in 32 games for Atletico last season. But credit must also be given to Atletico’s defence as Jan Oblak guided the defence in front of him and managed to make extraordinary saves to keep Atletico’s lead multiple times during the season leading to an astonishing stat of only 25 goals conceded.
Oblak stats reveal that the Slovenian goalkeeper made 103 saves for Atletico Madrid boasting an 80% save percentage for the season. In the La Liga season that just ended, Oblak conceded 25 goals, had 18 clean sheets and saved three penalties in 38 appearances for his club. He also holds the record for being the fastest goalkeeper to claim 100 clean sheets in just 182 La Liga appearances.
Earlier, Jan Oblak was awarded the prize for the top goalkeeper of the La Liga season that just ended.
