Karan Johar addresses backlash over ‘Homebound’ remark; clarifies his support for the film

After facing criticism for his comment on Homebound, Karan Johar clarified that his words were misinterpreted and reaffirmed his pride in the film, calling it one of his company’s finest works.

Filmmaker Karan Johar has responded to the growing controversy surrounding his recent remark about Homebound, the film starring Janhvi Kapoor, Ishaan Khatter, and Vishal Jethwa. His earlier statement that he “might not make a film like Homebound again” sparked backlash from fans and even prompted a subtle dig from the film’s director, Neeraj Ghaywan.

Addressing the issue on Instagram, Karan urged the media not to distort his words. In a detailed note, he clarified that his earlier comments were made in the context of an academic discussion on the business side of cinema and were not a criticism of the film itself. “I humbly request my friends and members of the media to not misconstrue or misquote my comments on our film Homebound,” he wrote. “I am and will always be exceptionally proud of Homebound. It will always shine in our repertoire of films as one of our finest and most sensitively performed and directed works.”

Karan also praised the film’s growing success, adding that his team is working to ensure it reaches a larger global audience. “We are thrilled with the day-on-day increase in domestic footfalls,” he said, reaffirming his commitment to promoting the movie.

The controversy began when Johar’s remarks about the film’s box office returns were seen as dismissive, with many accusing him of favoring Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari, starring Varun Dhawan, over Homebound. Following the uproar, Neeraj Ghaywan appeared to respond indirectly by resharing a fan review that praised a powerful emotional scene from Homebound, accompanied by a subtle jab at Johar’s other production.

While debates continue online, Karan’s clarification aims to put an end to the misunderstanding and reinforce his faith in Homebound as an important part of his creative journey.
