Filmmaker Karan Johar, who surprised many with his noticeable weight loss last year, has finally spoken in detail about the journey behind his physical transformation. Addressing long-standing rumours about the use of Ozempic, Johar firmly denied the claims and explained that his weight loss was the result of medical findings and lifestyle changes rather than shortcuts.
Speaking on The Manyavar Shaadi Show with Aadar Jain and Alekha, Johar reflected on his complicated relationship with weight from a young age. While his father believed his size was simply “puppy fat” that would fade with time, his mother was far more direct. Johar recalled that she often pointed out his weight issues and dismissed any idea of him becoming a film hero, a contrast he described with humour and honesty.
Johar shared that his first serious attempt to lose weight began during his college years, when he realised he was much heavier than his peers. Over time, he tried several extreme diets, including the General Motors diet. One attempt proved dangerous when he followed the Atkins diet for a month and fainted during a college class due to its strict high-protein structure. The incident led his mother to immediately put an end to such dieting.
Clarifying the truth behind his recent weight loss, Johar said medical tests revealed acute gluten and lactose intolerance during a visit to a health resort. He also discovered an undiagnosed thyroid condition and began medication. By cutting out gluten and sugar, switching to almond milk, and adjusting his diet to suit his body, his weight gradually reduced.
