Bollywood welcomed the New Year with the release of Sriram Raghavan’s Ikkis, a biographical war drama that hit theatres on January 1. Based on the life of Param Vir Chakra awardee Second Lieutenant Arun Khetarpal, the film revisits the hero’s sacrifice during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971. Soon after its release, filmmaker Karan Johar shared his glowing review, calling the film deeply moving and sincere.
Taking to social media, Karan described Ikkis as a “love letter to peace” and an honest reflection on the futility of war. He praised Raghavan’s restrained storytelling, noting that the film’s quiet moments leave a lasting emotional impact. According to Karan, the film “silently screams,” making its message even more powerful.
A significant part of Karan’s praise was reserved for Dharmendra, whose role in Ikkis marks his final film appearance, released posthumously. Calling the veteran actor’s screen presence towering yet gentle, Karan said he was moved every time Dharmendra appeared on screen, especially in his portrayal of a grieving father.
Karan also applauded Agastya Nanda, who makes his theatrical debut as Arun Khetarpal. He described the young actor’s performance as outstanding, highlighting his innocence, quiet determination, and emotional growth through the film. Expressing pride and excitement, Karan said he looks forward to witnessing Agastya’s journey ahead.
The film also features Simar Bhatia as Kiran, Arun’s love interest, and Jaideep Ahlawat in a key role, whom Karan described as “rock solid.” He concluded by urging audiences to watch what he called a gem of a true story.
