Octavia E. Butler was regarded as a pioneer in Black literature until she passed away in 2006. She became known as the “Queen Mother of Science Fiction” to many thanks to books like Fledgling and Parable of the Sower. But Kindred is currently getting a TV adaptation and is regarded as a staple of Butler’s illustrious catalog of books.

The plot of the Hugo Award-winning novel, which was published in 1979, concentrates on the interracial couple Dana James and Kevin Franklin, whose lives are abruptly turned upside down when Dana starts to shift between the present and Maryland in 1815. Kindred employs science fiction to reproduce one of the worst crimes committed in the United States while it was still active.

The novel will be adapted by FX into an eight-episode limited series. The series showrunner is Pulitzer Prize-winning producer of Watchmen Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, while the pilot is directed by Zola filmmaker Janicza Bravo. Here is all the information we have about Kindred.

Kindred Plot

The official Kindred Hulu synopsis is as follows:

“Adapted from the celebrated novel Kindred, by Hugo Award-winner Octavia E. Butler, the FX series centers on Dana James (Mallori Johnson), a young Black woman and aspiring writer who has uprooted her life of familial obligation and relocated to Los Angeles, ready to claim a future that, for once, feels all her own. But, before she can settle into her new home, she finds herself being violently pulled back and forth in time. She emerges at a nineteenth-century plantation, a place remarkably and intimately linked with Dana and her family. Interracial romance threads through Dana’s past and present, and the clock is ticking as she struggles to confront secrets she never knew ran through her blood, in this genre-breaking exploration of the ties that bind.”
