Looking ahead to India’s World Test Championship final against New Zealand next month, Shubman Gill discussed the batting disparities between skipper Virat Kohli and opener Rohit Sharma.
When asked about his experience with the squad and relationships with captain Virat Kohli and opener Rohit Sharma, Gill said, “Virat bhai encourages me to play freely anytime we talk about the game. He talks a lot about attitude, how you need to be in a good frame of mind when you walk up to bat, and he shares his experiences. When I’m batting alongside Rohit bhai, we typically talk about where the bowlers are going to bowl, what the scenario is like, and when to take a risk or not.”
Gill, who has played seven Tests so far, has been in the Indian Test team since 2019, but his breakthrough came in December with the Boxing Day Test at the MCG. He excelled with his explosive batting during the Australia tour, but Gill felt it will be vital for him to play session after session in England. He believes, in England, when there is cloud cover, the ball swings more, and when the sun shines, it becomes easier to bat. As an opener, it is critical to analyze such conditions.
Gill, along with the rest of the squad, is quarantined in Mumbai for 14 days. This will be his first senior tour to England, having made his debut in Australia in December of last year.
