Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital Sets a New Standard in Sustainable Healthcare With JCI Global Distinction

Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital & Medical Research Institute has achieved an extraordinary milestone by becoming the first Indian hospital and only the fifth worldwide to be awarded the Certificate of Distinction for Healthcare Sustainability by JCI and the Geneva Sustainability Centre.

The recognition comes at a pivotal moment for global healthcare, one of the top five contributors to carbon emissions, as hospitals confront intensifying climate-related disruptions. The certification aligns Kokilaben Hospital with pioneering global frameworks like TCFD and ISSB, which are reshaping standards for climate disclosures, resilience and governance.

Reflecting on the achievement, Dr. Santosh Shetty said:
“The certification reflects our core belief that sustainability unlocks both better clinical outcomes and stronger operating performance. Our 2030 Sustainability Roadmap focuses on energy efficiency, water stewardship, low-emission materials, and climate-resilient infrastructure. These investments are designed to reduce long-term cost pressures, improve patient safety, and strengthen business continuity in a city facing increasing climate volatility.”

The JCI–GSC programme recognises hospitals that integrate sustainability into core enterprise risk systems, covering emissions reduction, waste optimisation, water stewardship and supply-chain resilience.

India’s healthcare systems face mounting climate pressures, with rapid development stressing infrastructure and national programmes like NPCCHH expanding expectations on emissions reporting, circularity and disaster preparedness. With climate-linked damages projected to cost South Asia up to USD 36 billion annually by 2050, the need for future-ready hospitals is urgent.

Kokilaben Hospital’s global certification stands out as a milestone in Indian healthcare, demonstrating that responsible, climate-resilient and operationally strong healthcare is achievable even in resource-stressed environments.
