Kylian Mbappe and Olivier Giroud scores as France ease past Gibraltar in Euro Qualifiers

Strikers Olivier Giroud and Kylian Mbappé scored as France won 3-0 in Gibraltar on Friday to keep up its great start to European Championship qualifying.

After only three minutes, Giroud headed home right winger Kingsley Coman’s cross to give France a record-extending 54th goal.

At the 30,000-seat Estádio Algarve in Faro, Mbappé converted a penalty in first-half injury time to make it 2-0 and reach 39 goals for France. Mbappé is now only two goals behind French great Michel Platini, who is fourth all-time in France scoring.

Gibraltar, which is rated 201st in the world and second-last in Europe behind only San Marino, nearly pulled level in the 34th minute when Ayoub El Hmidi attempted to lob goalkeeper Brice Samba from just inside France’s half.

Gibraltar’s own goal in the second half made it 3-0.

On Monday, France will host Greece, who is now second in Group B, at the Stade de France.

On Friday, Greece defeated Ireland 2-1 at home.
