Legendary sprinter Milkha Singh passes away at 91 after his prolonged battle with COVID-19

Legendary Indian sprinter Milkha Singh passes away at the age of 91 after suffering from Covid-19, his son confirmed.

Former Indian sprinter, Milkha Singh also known as Flying Sikh, passes away at 91 after his prolonged battle with Covid-19. The athlete was suffering from serious complications after testing positive for the virus.

His son Jeev Milkha Singh told to the Indian Express: “Dad just passed away”.

His condition turned critical on Friday evening by developing a fever and complications to his health while recovering and regaining post COVID-19 said hospital sources.

Legendary sprinter, Milkha Singh had contracted COVID-19 last month. He tested negative for the virus after fighting for almost a month and had been shifted to another section of the PGIMER hospital from COVID ICU for post-COVID examinations, according to Hindustan times.

Four-time Asian Games Gold medalist and 1958 Commonwealth Games champion had tested positive for the virus on May 19. He overcame the virus after almost a month of suffering and was shifted to the Advanced Cardiac Centre of PGIMER from the COVID section to monitor his conditions post-COVID and for recovery. His medical conditions were stable then. Dr Ashok Kumar, the official spokesperson of PGIMER had told that Milkha Singh was in stable condition and was recovering after he was shifted out of the COVID hospital. The legendary athlete was admitted to PGIMER on June 3 after he started having complications to his health and his oxygen level dropped at home following treatment for a week at the Fortis hospital in Mohali.

Milkha’s wife who was 85 years old, late Nirmal Kaur was also infected with the virus days after her husband contracted. Former national women’s volleyball team captain, Kaur passed away five days back due to the complications at a private hospital.
