Lewandowski and Bellingham awarded by the German professional footballer’s union

Robert Lewandowski is voted Bundesliga Player of the Season and Jude Bellingham the Newcomer of the Season by the German professional footballer’s union.

Robert Lewandowski was voted as the Bundesliga Player of the Season by fellow professionals in the German footballers union. Likewise, Jude Bellingham was named the Newcomer of the Season by the union.

Lewandowski had a record-breaking season where he broke Gerd Mueller’s 49-year-old record when he bagged the 41st Bundesliga goal of the campaign seconds before the final whistle in the last match of the 2020/21 season for FC Bayern München. Gerd Mueller’s incredible record while playing for FC Bayern München in 1971/72 was never thought to be matched until Lewandowski scored in the dying moments of the game against FC Augsburg. While Mueller scored his 40 goals over 34 league games in 1971/72, injury and squad rotation meant 29 matches were enough for Lewandowski to break the record.

“Robert is an athlete, Gerd was an artist,” Mueller’s wife – Uschi Mueller – told magazine Sport Bild.

Jude Bellingham of Borussia Dortmund had an incredible season to remember too. The 17-year-old helped BVB win the DFB Pokal and secure a top-four Bundesliga finish in his first season with the club. Dortmund snapped Bellingham up for £25 million ($35m) last summer after seeing the midfielder emerged as one of the most exciting young players in England at Birmingham City. The talented teenager has racked up 45 appearances across all competitions for Dortmund to date in 2020-21, while also scoring four goals and recording four assists.

“When you talk to him and see how he plays, you can hardly believe that he is only 17,” said Dortmund head coach Edin Terzic.
