The transfer of football’s greatest player to Inter Miami shook the entire country and the world. Messi has only gained more fame ever since the move. In fact, the transfer was so massive that it set records.
Lionel Messi’s move to Inter Miami set a record for jersey sales within the first 24 hours of a player making a move to another team in all of sports. Messi broke records set by Cristiano Ronaldo, who famously returned to Manchester United after nearly going for their archrivals, Manchester City.
Messi’s record also surpassed the record held by Tom Brady, who left his old team, the New England Patriots, where he had played for 17 years, to join the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, which were owned by the Glazer family.
LeBron James’ move from the Cleveland Cavaliers to the Los Angeles Lakers was significant. But not as large as Messi, according to Fanatics, an Americal-based company that sells jerseys online.
Inter Miami has begun the season well, winning three games against Cruz Azul, Atalanta United and Orlando City. Miami will be hoping to make a comeback after an awful season that resulted in the firing of former coach Phil Neville.
