Maha Kumbh 2025: Akhara Sadhus takes sacred plunge ‘Amrit Snan’ at Triveni Sangam on Makar Sankranti

On Tuesday, thousands of devotees braved the cold and heavy fog to gather to the Triveni Sangam in Prayagraj for the Makar Sankranti festival and take a sacred plunge known as the “Amrit Snan.”

Yogi Adityanath, the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, sent greetings on Makar Sankranti. “Today is the first day of the first Amrit Snan of Maha Kumbh. It is incredible to witness the attraction towards the Maha Kumbh in the country and the world. Yesterday, almost 1.75 crore devotees took a dip at the Triveni Sangam,” Yogi Aditynath shared on X.

To expedite the ‘Amrit Snan’ of 13 Akharas, the administration issued an order. Those of the Shaivite and Vaishnavite faiths shall take Amrit Snan after Shri Panchayati Akhara Mahanirvani and Shri Shambhu Panchayati Atal Akhara.

Makar Sankranti is observed annually on January 14 and goes by several names around the nation, including Pongal, Bihu, and Maghi. At many ghats across the nation, devotees carry out rites in accordance with regional customs. Poorna Kumbh, also known as Maha Kumbh-2025, will continue till February 26.

Important’snan’ dates are January 14 (First Shahi Snan, or Makar Sankranti), January 29 (Second Shahi Snan, or Mauni Amavasya), February 3 (Third Shahi Snan, or Basant Panchami), February 12 (Maghi Purnima), and February 26 (Maha Shivaratri). Although the current Kumbh is being conducted after 12 years, the event is even more auspicious since, according to seers, the heavenly permutations and combinations for the event are occurring after 144 years.
