Maharashtra to grant voting rights to directly elected chiefs of municipal councils and Nagar Panchayats

On Wednesday, the Maharashtra cabinet resolved to alter a statute by promulgating an ordinance that will provide directly elected presidents of municipal councils and nagar panchayats membership and vote powers. To allow directly elected presidents to join their respective municipal bodies, the Maharashtra Municipal Councils, Nagar Panchayats, and Industrial Townships Act, 1965 will be changed.

As a member, they will have one vote, the Chief Minister’s Office said in a statement. The president will cast a vote if there is a tie during the voting process, it said. This decision was made at a cabinet meeting presided over by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis with the intention of strengthening the role of directly elected presidents in municipal government and acknowledging their popular mandate.

Additionally, the cabinet authorized the free distribution of one acre of Dairy Development property. Department at Dharashiv city for the erection of a statue of folk poet and social reformer Lokshahir Annabhau Sathe.

According to the announcement, the Dharashiv Municipal Council will receive the site where a government milk chilling facility is located for that purpose. A long-standing demand from social organizations and public officials led to this decision. The cabinet authorized divisional commissioners to regularize the services of 291 nurses under the Zilla Parishad health departments who are either retired or working on bonds.

After finishing their training at government nursing institutes, these nurses were first appointed for a set amount of time before being offered temporary positions based on local needs. However, the statement also stated that divisional commissioners’ power to regularize these appointments was taken away in 2018.

The most recent ruling will regularize the services of bonded nurses hired prior to April 15, 2015, including both those who are currently employed and those who have retired. In order to improve the efficiency of village, taluka, and district-level administration, the cabinet approved the District Karmayogi Programme 2.0 and the Sarpanch Samvad Program.

The Mitra organization will carry out both initiatives. Agriculture officers, engineers, gram sevaks, talathis, agriculture assistants, health workers, irrigation inspectors, and statistical officers are among the grassroots employees that District Karmayogi 2.0 will concentrate on training.

The program would teach some 85,000 officers and workers throughout Maharashtra to enhance administrative effectiveness and service delivery. Along with enhancing government-to-business services at the district level, the project will also concentrate on resolving regional problems that micro, small, and medium-sized businesses, industrial units, and farmer-producer organizations confront. The statement will promote better departmental collaboration and enhanced data utilization in decision-making.
