Manchester United include Mason Greenwood in 2023-24 squad after sexual assault charges were dropped

Manchester United stated on Friday that contract negotiations with David de Gea are still ongoing after the Spanish goalkeeper was left off the club’s retained list for next season. In the meantime, Mason Greenwood was added to the list 4 months after charges of attempted rape and assault were dropped against him.

De Gea is set to become a free agent this summer, although he might stay at the club where he has been since signing from Atletico Madrid in 2011. “Discussions remain open with David over a potential new contract,” United said.

In spite of winning the Premier League Golden Glove for most clean sheets last season, De Gea’s position has been put into doubt due to concerns over his ability to play out from the back with his feet. Manager Erik ten Hag sees it as an important characteristic in his goalkeepers and United has been linked with a summer transfer for Brentford’s David Raya.

While De Gea’s future is unknown, Greenwood’s is also in doubt despite being included on the retained list. The 21-year-old striker has not played for United since he was arrested in January 2022 on suspicion of rape and assault.

The charges against him were dropped in February of this year, but he is still the subject of an internal “process” being conducted by United. While it has been speculated whether he will return to the club, he is still under contract until 2025. In February, United stated it will “conduct its own process before determining next steps.”
