Former Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar is in serious care after suffering a brain haemorrhage, as reported by his former club Ajax.
Van der Sar, 52, was most recently a director at Ajax before leaving at the end of last season after the team placed third in the Dutch league and missed out on Champions League football for the first time since 2009.
Ajax said in a statement, “On Friday, Edwin van der Sar has had a bleeding around his brain. He’s currently in hospital in the intensive care unit and is in a stable condition.” The statement further reads, “Once there is more concrete information, an update will follow. Everyone at Ajax wishes Edwin a speedy recovery. We’re thinking of you.”

His spouse Annemarie had suffered a brain haemorrhage while he was a player at Old Trafford in 2009, but she recovered well.
Van der Sar stated in May that he was stepping down as CEO of Ajax following “an incredibly tough period” as a chief executive of the Amsterdam powerhouse.
His resignation took place after the top Dutch team had its worst season in 14 years, finishing third in the Eredivisie.
Van der Sar, considered as one of the world’s greatest goalkeepers ever, played with Ajax from 1990 until 1999, winning the Champions League in 1995.
