Manchester United midfielder Fred subjected to racist abuse online after 2-4 loss to Liverpool

Fred was racially abused on Instagram following Manchester United’s 4-2 defeat to Liverpool at Old Trafford on Thursday; the Brazilian has previously spoken out about online racism. Sky Sports News has reached out to Instagram’s parent company, Facebook, for a response.

The Brazilian received a number of racially charged messages, including racial slurs and ‘monkey emojis.’ He was previously racially abused after United’s FA Cup exit to Leicester this season.

After being abused on social media following the quarter-final loss, Fred said in March, “We are bigger and better than that.”

Fred is the latest United player to be singled out, following Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial, and Axel Tuanzebe in the past.

United has previously issued statements condemning the abuse directed at their players and labeling those responsible “mindless idiots.” The club continues to want social media companies to take the lead in protecting their players, including taking steps to ensure accounts are verified rather than anonymous.

Football has no room for racism. If you see a racist comment or reply, report it. #saynotoracism
