Manchester United’s new captain is Portuguese midfielder Bruno Fernandes. The Premier League side made the announcement on Thursday.
Since joining United from Sporting Lisbon in 2020, Fernandes has registered 64 goals and 54 assists in 185 appearances.
After speaking with manager Erik ten Hag, Harry Maguire announced on Twitter on Sunday that he was no longer United’s captain. Only eight league starts were made by the centre-back last year, which sparked continuous rumours over his future at Old Trafford.
The 28-year-old Fernandes, who often played the role of captain during Maguire’s absence from the team last season, had been expected to be awarded the permanent position. As United finished third and qualified for the Champions League for the first time since 2021, he appeared in all but one of the team’s league fixtures.
Ten Hag’s squad landed in the United States on Thursday for a 12-day tour, although he will be missing midfielder Fred, who has stayed in England for personal reasons.
