Manika Batra beats Cheng I-Ching to enter pre-quarters at WTT Star Contender

On Thursday at the WTT Star Contender Ljubljana, Indian table tennis player Manika Batra defeated Chen I-ching, ranked 15th in the world, to advance to the women’s singles pre-quarterfinals.

World number 32 Manika needed only 23 minutes to defeat her strong Chinese Taipei opponent 11-4, 11-9, 11-7 in a round of 32 match.

Ching won an Olympic medal in mixed doubles and many World Championship medals in doubles and team events. She was previously ranked fifth in the world.

Manika will next take on the winner of Bernadette Szocs vs. Adria Diaz.

In the women’s singles draw, the 28-year-old is the only Indian participant. Margaryta Pesotska of Ukraine was beaten by her in the opening round after five games.
