Manipur police have arrested the sixth accused in connection with the horrific case of two Kuki women being paraded naked on the streets, with one of them being allegedly gang raped.
“Another accused was arrested today. Altogether 6 persons including five main accused and one Juvenile has been arrested,” said Manipur police in a tweet.
The video of the sexual assault went viral on Wednesday, nearly two months after the incident. The crime took place on May 4, the day after violence began in the state.
Responding to the sexual assault, Chief Minister N Biren Singh assured strict actions against the culprits. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also reacted to the incident and called for strict action for such “shameful” act.
In retaliation of the crime, the women of the north eastern state staged protest. The protestors also lit up the house of the prime suspect, which was the first arrest made by state police. Over the weekend, another house of an accused was burnt by the women protestors.
