Actor Manisha Koirala has spoken out strongly against the violent crackdown on protesters in Nepal, calling it a “black day” for her homeland. The veteran star took to social media and shared a haunting image of a blood-soaked shoe, expressing her anguish over the deaths in Kathmandu. Her caption in Nepali, translated into English, read: “Today is a black day for Nepal. When bullets respond to the voice of the people, outrage against corruption and demand for justice.”
Her statement comes after a wave of protests, largely led by Gen Z demonstrators, turned violent in the capital. Sparked by Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli’s ban on 26 social media platforms, the demonstrations saw thousands storm the Parliament complex demanding accountability. The clashes left at least 20 people dead and more than 250 injured as security forces used tear gas, batons, and live rounds to disperse the crowds.
The government has since imposed curfews across several major cities including Kathmandu, Pokhara, and Birgunj, while the army has been deployed to restore order. Under immense pressure, home minister Ramesh Lekhak resigned, taking moral responsibility for the bloodshed.
Koirala, known for iconic roles in films such as Dil Se, Bombay, and 1942: A Love Story, recently made a strong comeback with Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Netflix series Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar. Her emotional post has struck a chord with fans and fellow Nepalis during this time of crisis.
