Mankatha, Ajith Kumar’s 2011 release, is returning to theaters this weekend. The much-loved action movie, helmed by Venkat Prabhu, has a record advance booking for its opening day in Tamil Nadu. According to estimates, the picture made more than Rs. 2.20 crore in advances on Day 1 in its native state, setting a record for the highest pre-sales of any re-release film.
Mankatha overtook the previous record holder, Ghilli, which received Rs. 2.15 crore in Tamil Nadu on its first day of re-release. The Thalapathy Vijay starrer was a huge hit at the box office. It remains the highest-grossing re-release of all time in Tamil Nadu, earning more than Rs. 26.50 crore.
The manner Mankatha has recorded its advancements suggests that the film is on track for a strong launch at the box office. It will be intriguing to see if the Ajith Kumar picture can break Ghilli’s day one box office record. Mankatha tells the narrative of Vinayak Mahadevan, a crafty and suspended Mumbai police officer who becomes entangled with a group plotting to steal Rs 500 crore via illicit IPL betting. However, his ultimate goal is to deceive everyone and take the money for himself.
As Vinayak orchestrates betrayals and manipulations, his scheme begins to spiral out of hand, and he participates in a high-stakes cat-and-mouse game with a relentless police officer and local goons. The story proceeds with various turns, revealing that no one is who they seem, with Vinayak eventually establishing himself as the “Kingmaker.” In addition to Ajith Kumar, the film stars Arjun Sarja, Trisha Krishnan, Raai Laxmi, Anjali, Andrea Jeremiah, Vaibhav, Ashwin Kakumanu, Premji Amaren, and others in significant parts.
