Marco Reus decided to give up the captain’s armband for Borussia Dortmund, bringing his five-year spell with the Schwarzgelben to an end.
Following a tumultuous season in which Dortmund, which finished in heartbreak as Dortmund missed out on winning the Bundesliga title on the last day of the season, the club legend decided that it was time for another person to take up the role of captain and lead the team from next season onwards.
The 34-year-old stated he made the decision during the summer break and believes the club will find a worthy successor.
In 2018, Reus was named captain of Borussia Dortmund after Marcel Schmelzer decided to step down from the role. The attacking midfielder is the second-highest goalscorer in club history and has made 387 appearances for the Black and Yellows.
Speaking on the club’s social media page, the 34-year-old said, “Hello BVB fans, It is very important for me to tell you something personally. I had a lot to think about during my vacation, and I have decided to pass on the captain’s armband.”

Reus’ decision is not surprising given that he lost his starting spot at the end of last season. Giving up the captaincy will allow him to play next season without the extra pressure next season.
