Mason Greenwood withdraws from England’s Euro 2020 squad with injury

Mason Greenwood of Manchester United has withdrawn from England’s provisional roster for the European Championships this summer. After regaining form towards the close of last season, the 19-year-old was anticipated to be named to Gareth Southgate’s 26-man squad for Euro 2020. United, on the other hand, has stated that he will remain in Manchester for treatment of an “underlying injury.”

The Red Devils academy graduate finished the season on a high note, scoring six goals in his final eight Premier League games. The news that he would not be available comes as a big blow to Southgate, who now has to decide how to replace the versatile and clinical forward with less than two weeks until the tournament begins.

Manchester United published a statement saying:

“Manchester United striker Mason Greenwood has withdrawn from the provisional England Euro 2020 squad, in order to recover fully from an underlying injury that also kept him out of the Under-21 European Championship in March,” a club statement said.

“Mason’s club appearances were managed carefully to maintain his availability through the intensive 2020/21 Premier League and Europa League schedules.

“But a further spell of tournament football would not be beneficial and Mason will remain at Manchester United to recuperate and prepare for pre-season training.”

Greenwood’s absence brings the total to 32, with uncapped trio Ben Godfrey, Ben White, and Aaron Ramsdale also due to go. That gives England’s manager just three more players to eliminate. Despite their recent injury problems, both Jordan Henderson and Harry Maguire are anticipated to be selected.

The 19-year-old made his International debut through Iceland in September of last year, but was sent home after the game for violating team procedures, along with Manchester City midfielder Phil Foden, and has yet to play since.

Greenwood’s absence boosts the likelihood of Aston Villa attacker Ollie Watkins being named as Southgate’s third striker, behind captain Harry Kane and Everton forward Dominic Calvert-Lewin. United has not disclosed the nature of the injury, although Greenwood’s departure from the European Under-21 Championships was due to a groin issue.
