MEA striving to bring Mehul Choksi back to India, says officials

Mehul Chinubhai Choksi has a close rapport with crime and fraud. He is a fugitive Indian-born Antigua and Barbuda businessman, who is now wanted by the Indian judicial authorities on a number of accounts including criminal breach of trust, criminal conspiracy, cheating, and dishonesty including corruption, delivery of property, and money laundering.

After being caught in Dominica after several years, on May 23rd for illegal entry into Dominica, is now in the custody of them and is awaiting deportation to come back to India. He is currently being tried at the Roseau Magistrate court against the charges of illegal entry into Dominica.

Mehul Choksi was denied bail and the magistrate has decreed him to be presented to face the charges of illegal entry into the country. Local media has reported that the cabinet of the Caribbean Islands decided that Choksi is to be deported from Dominica to India directly and Antigua and Barbuda are in the favor of that decision.

A meeting was held on Wednesday by the cabinet and the minutes of the meeting were published by the media which shows that the “Choksi matter” was on the agenda. It was then decided that Choksi was now a problem of Dominica and not that of Antigua and Barbuda.

With a few legal proceedings still being processed, the ministry of external affairs on Thursday said that they are making all endeavors to bring him and all other fugitives who have fled the country back to India.
