Mehul Choksi’s citizenship denied by Antigua, declared a prohibited immigrant by Dominica

According to a letter accessed by CNN-News 18, the 62-year-old fugitive diamantaire is left with no citizenship other than that of India. Antigua denies the citizenship of Mehul Choksi and Dominica’s Internal Securities Minister Rayburn Blackmore highlighted that he is a prohibited immigrant.

“Choksi did not enter the island illegally, and the cops cannot detain him as he is not a ‘prohibited immigrant,” claimed Choksi’s lawyer. Soon after this Antigua declared that Choksi is not their citizen. According to the letter, he was declared a ‘prohibited immigrant’ on May 25. The officials sent a notice to the businessman on the same day, notifying him that he is not allowed to enter Dominica.

At the beginning of this week, Prime Minister of Dominica, Roosevelt Skerrit had mentioned that the event related to the economic offender’s illegal entry into the island is before the tribunal which will take the next course of action required. The Prime Minister of Dominica also referred to the 62-year-old as an Indian citizen.

Choksi is facing a case before the court for his illegal entry to the island from Antigua, a country where he claims to be living as a citizen since May 2018. His rights of life have been taken care of. He is getting treated in a hospital located in Dominica.

“The matter of this Indian citizen (Mehul Choksi) is before the court. The court will decide what happens to the gentleman,” he said in a press statement. However, the Prime Minister added, “Choksi’s rights will be respected as has been done so far.”
