Michael Jordan has influenced millions of people to play basketball, including many of the top players of this century. He is still the first name mentioned when discussing the best of all time, and he is the one to which the most recent greats are related.
Away from the hardwood, MJ is a businessman and a brand, and he has a plethora of strings to his bow that make him a fascinating person.
1. Jordan’s #23 has become so popular in athletics that players use it even though they are playing an entirely different sport. While the number is associated with “His Airness,” it was not the only one he wore during his career. However, these were not his only numbers throughout his professional career; in one game in 1990, he was asked to don a nameless #12 shirt.
2. He set the record for career scoring average in both the regular season and playoffs. He owns the regular-season scoring average record of 30.12 points per game, as well as the postseason scoring average record of 33.45 points per game.
3. He donated his first-year Wizards salary to relief efforts after the September 11th attacks. He declared his return soon after the September 11th attacks, along with the news that his entire first-year salary would be donated to recovery efforts. This included $900,000 for humanitarian programs and $100,000 for children whose parents had died.
4. Jordan has a fear of water that derives from a horrific event that occurred while he was a teenager. He saw a good friend die when he was sucked into the undertow, which left him scarred for life.
5. Jordan had 10 triple-doubles in an 11-game period, averaging 33.6 points per game, 10.8 rebounds per game, and 11.4 assists per game. In the one game in which he did not record a triple-double, he had a stat line that any player would be happy with 40 points, 11 assists, and 7 rebounds.
