Microsoft Sovereign Private Cloud scales to thousands of nodes with Azure Local

Microsoft has announced that Azure Local is now capable of supporting deployments of up to thousands of servers within a single sovereign environment. This enhancement allows organizations to manage significantly larger workloads locally across extensive datacenters, industrial settings, and edge locations while maintaining control within their sovereign boundaries.

As organizations dealing with national infrastructure, regulated workloads, or mission-critical services face evolving digital sovereignty requirements and tighter regulations, there is a growing need for cloud infrastructure that ensures jurisdictional control over data, operations, and dependencies. With AI and data-intensive applications moving closer to data generation points, infrastructure must scale to support larger deployment footprints while ensuring operational control, compliance, and data residency within sovereign environments.

Azure Local forms the basis of Microsoft’s Sovereign Private Cloud, enabling organizations to operate cloud-consistent infrastructure on hardware they own within their sovereign boundaries. It supports deployments across connected, intermittently connected, or fully disconnected environments. Through Azure Local, customers can locally enforce policies, role-based access control, and compliance configurations, maintaining control over infrastructure configuration, security, and updates irrespective of public cloud connectivity.

Sovereign Private Cloud deployments must scale to accommodate larger workloads and the operational demands of national infrastructure and regulated industries. Azure Local facilitates the expansion of deployments from hundreds to thousands of servers within a single sovereign boundary, allowing infrastructure to grow with demand without needing architectural redesign.

As deployment sizes increase, maintaining service continuity for mission-critical operations becomes crucial. Expanded fault domains and infrastructure pools help prevent hardware failures from causing service disruptions, ensuring critical workloads continue to operate across environments with varying cloud connectivity levels.

At larger scales, organizations can execute data-intensive AI inference and analytics workloads entirely within their environments. With support for high-performance GPU infrastructure, sensitive models and operational data remain under customer control, while access management and compliance controls are maintained.

The increased scale of deployment opens up new opportunities for workload placement, from large sovereign private cloud deployments to distributed AI workloads, allowing organizations to run data-intensive and latency-sensitive applications entirely within their sovereign boundaries.

AT&T, a major telecommunications operator, is using Azure Local to manage mission-critical infrastructure on their own hardware, aiming for full operational control at the scale demanded by their business. Kadaster, the Netherlands’ official land registry and mapping agency, is also using Azure Local to maintain sovereign control over sensitive public data. FiberCop, Italy’s leading digital network operator, is deploying Azure Local across its edge locations to deliver sovereign cloud and AI services nationwide.

Azure Local is available with validated compute and enterprise storage platforms from partners like DataON, Dell Technologies, Everpure, Hitachi Vantara, HPE, Lenovo, and NetApp, allowing the integration of existing Storage Area Networks (SAN) and enabling compute and storage resources to scale independently within sovereign environments.

Intel® Xeon® 6 processors provide the computing foundation for the platform, designed for modern enterprise workloads’ density and performance demands. With built-in AI acceleration, organizations running inference or generative AI workloads within their sovereign environments do not need specialized infrastructure.

Azure Local, along with validated compute and enterprise storage platforms, accelerated computing platforms, and underlying silicon, provides a datacenter-scale stack that supports sovereign infrastructure deployments while ensuring data, models, and execution remain within customer-controlled environments.

Azure Local was developed to meet diverse customer requirements, whether they involve strict data residency, disconnected operations, regulated workloads, or AI processing near data generation points. As these requirements evolve globally across regulated industries and governments, Sovereign Private Cloud deployments can expand from single nodes at the edge to large enterprise-scale datacenter environments, operating on hardware owned by organizations, with consistent lifecycle management through Azure.
