Mikkey Dee, the drummer of the legendary rock band Scorpions and former drummer for Motörhead, has shared a surprising health update with his fans. In a post on Facebook dated January 2, 2025, Mikkey revealed that he was recently hospitalized for a serious health issue. He explained that he had been battling sepsis, a dangerous blood infection, and was in the hospital for three weeks. He thanked everyone who had reached out to him during the holidays, acknowledging that he hadn’t been able to respond sooner.
In his message, Mikkey described the severity of his condition, saying, “This holiday season, I have been hospitalized with a very serious blood infection (Sepsis). I was admitted for three weeks but now I am home fighting this bastard bacteria.” Despite the tough time, Mikkey made sure to thank the staff at Sahlgrenska University Hospital in Gothenburg, his hometown, for providing “excellent care.” He noted that he still has a long road to recovery, but he’s optimistic about 2025.
Mikkey also expressed his determination to return to playing drums, saying, “Now I’m working a 100% to be back on the drum stool for the Residency.” He excitedly mentioned that Scorpions would be celebrating their 60th anniversary in 2025 and that he would be playing “many exciting gigs around the world” with the band. He wrapped up his post by wishing everyone a great year ahead filled with good health and, of course, plenty of Rock ‘n’ Roll.
Earlier, Mikkey shared more details with Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet about how his sepsis started. It all began after an ankle injury, where his ankle swelled up and became unusually misshapen, looking like “an overcooked ham.” His condition worsened quickly, and he became so ill that he had to be rushed to the hospital by ambulance. The doctors told him his test results were “sky-high,” meaning his infection was critical, and they immediately had to treat it, even removing any infected areas. Mikkey reflected on the ordeal, saying, “It was not a good journey I was on… Another day and I’d be playing drums with Lemmy [Kilmister, Motörhead’s late frontman] in heaven. I can say that.”
Despite the scare, Mikkey is now focused on his recovery and excited to return to the stage. He’s set to kick off Scorpions’ Las Vegas residency in late February, which will be an exciting milestone for the band. Fans can look forward to seeing him back behind the drum kit and rocking out with Scorpions in the coming months.
