Indian female star weightlifter Mirabai Chanu has created history by winning the silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics. Mirabai won the silver medal in the women’s 49 kg weight category. And with this, India has won its first medal in Tokyo Olympics. Hou Zhihui of China won the gold medal by lifting 210 kg and Indonesia’s Windy Cantika Aisah won the bronze.
With the win, Chanu ended India’s 21-year wait for a medal in the Olympic Games weightlifting event. Chanu won the silver medal in clean and jerk by lifting a total of 202 kg from 115 kg and 87 kg in snatch. Earlier, Karnam Malleswari had won the country a bronze medal in weightlifting at the Sydney Olympics 2000.
on the other hand, Indian shooter Saurabh Chaudhary finished seventh in the final of the 10m air pistol event. Saurabh finished first in the qualifying round of the 6th series with 586 out of 600 points. But he could not perform well in the final.
In other games played on Saturday, In men’s hockey, India made a great start by defeating New Zealand 3-2. The pair of Deepika Kumari and Praveen Jadhav lost in the quarterfinals of the Archery Mixed Event. At the same time, in women’s 10m air rifle event in shooting, Elavenil Valarivan and Apurvi Chandela of India could not qualify for the final. Also, India’s Sushila Devi had to face defeat in Judo.
