Myanmar military blocks messaging services including Facebook for three days

The military in Myanmar has temporarily blocked messaging services including Facebook saying it is for public interest.

Myanmar’s Ministry of Transport and Communications gave directions to internet service providers, mobile operators and international gateways to block Facebook under section 77 of Telecommunications Law. The social media platform will be blocked from 4th to 7th February. Half of the population of Myanmar uses Facebook. The opposition has been using the platform to send details about the coup that took place on 1st February. Photos of protests and civil disobedience campaigns have also been sent on the platform.

The military in Myanmar has declared a state of emergency for a year after staging a coup and taking over power. The coup is a result of prolonged friction between the ruling National League for Democracy (NLD) and the military.
