Nadiadwala Grandson Entertainment takes legal action over extortion threats; reaffirms support for free speech

Nadiadwala Grandson Entertainment has lodged a complaint with authorities against individuals allegedly demanding money to avoid posting negative content, while stressing its respect for free speech and genuine film criticism.

Nadiadwala Grandson Entertainment (NGE) has announced that it has approached investigative agencies after receiving evidence of alleged extortion attempts linked to its films and talent. The production house revealed on Monday that certain individuals had been demanding payment in exchange for not publishing damaging posts online.

In a statement shared on social media, NGE explained, “We recently came across evidence — including call recordings — indicating that a few individuals were demanding money and threatening to malign the reputation of our films, directors, and lead actors if their demands were not met. We believe such behaviour warrants investigation by the appropriate authorities.”

While stressing the seriousness of the issue, the company was careful to draw a line between malicious activity and genuine opinion. “We wish to emphasise that these actions are directed solely at those engaging in such malicious practices and not at any genuine, independent reviewers or YouTubers. We value honest work and wholeheartedly welcome their contributions to the healthy progress of the film industry,” the statement clarified.

NGE further reiterated that its move should not be seen as an attack on free speech. “We are firm supporters of the freedom of speech and expression as enshrined in the Constitution of India. We have never objected — and will never object — to fair criticism or reviews of our films. On the contrary, we believe that constructive criticism is essential for helping filmmakers grow and for fostering the healthy development of the industry.”

With its latest action, the production house has sent a strong message that while criticism is welcome, coercion and extortion will not be tolerated in the film industry.
