A zoology professor has been suspended by Nagaland University after it was alleged that he assaulted a female colleague and other research researchers and used derogatory language against them.
The professor has also been charged by the police with sexual harassment, assault, intimidation, and causing harm, and a first information report (FIR) has been filed against him. According to students, the incident happened on November 25 at the university’s Lumami campus in the Zunheboto area.
During the encounter, a female assistant professor was physically assaulted by the professor, who also used derogatory language with a group of post-graduate students. It’s unclear what caused the situation to occur.
Several student organisations, including the Naga Students’ Federation, All Nagaland College Students Union, and Nagaland University Students Union, have condemned the professor’s behaviour and called for his dismissal. The university’s student organisation stated that “his continued presence in the institution poses a grave threat to the safety and well-being of its members.”
It stated that the professor’s behaviour had previously been the subject of complaints. According to the student organisations, these show a history of intimidation, abuse, and disdain for the security and welfare of people in his immediate vicinity.
