Namibian male cheetah Pawan dies at Kuno National Park

On Tuesday, a Namibian cheetah named Pawan was discovered dead at Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh. This incidence was reported after the death of Gamini, a five-month-old African cheetah cub, on August 5, 2024.

Uttam Sharma, Additional Principal Chief Conservation of Forest (APCCF) and director of the Lion Project, claimed that Pawan was spotted immobile in a swollen nullah amidst bushes about 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday. Veterinarians stated that the upper portion of the animal’s body, particularly his head, was buried in water. The carcass appeared to be free of exterior damage.

Preliminary observations indicate that drowning was the most likely cause of death. However, more information will be revealed after the postmortem report is published. Due to straying incidents, Pawan, once known as Oban, was housed in an acclimatisation enclosure before being released into the wild. He was eventually permitted to graze freely in Kuno National Park’s free-range region in Madhya Pradesh’s Sheopur district. Pawan’s death leaves Kuno National Park with only 24 cheetahs. This consists of 12 adults and 12 cubs.
