It is still unknown where National Sandwich Day originated or who founded it. John Montagu coined the term “sandwich” in 1762 to describe the mixture of bread stuffed with cheese and meats. In 1929, two brothers who ran a sandwich shop in New Orleans invented the Po’boy, a sandwich that originated in Louisiana, to provide food for striking workers who were in need of food during the Great Depression. The American multinational fast-food restaurant chain Subway was established in Bridgeport, Connecticut, on August 28, 1965, with a focus on submarine sandwiches, wraps, salads and drinks.
