Netflix leaves netizens angry for re-releasing ‘Titanic’ after submersible tragedy

Some users on social media are upset with Netflix for re-releasing James Cameron’s famous movie Titanic on the platform only days after the Titanic tragedy. Last week, the tourist submersible sank, killing all 5 individuals on board.

The US Coast Guard announced last Thursday that 5 passengers on the Titan submarine passed away in an implosion. The vessel was diving at 13,000 feet to see the shipwreck of the passenger liner Titanic.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Netflix will re-release the Oscar-winning 1997 film on July 1 in the United States and Canada. Many individuals are upset by this decision. One user wrote on Twitter, “So Netflix was like, ‘Let’s capitalize on this sub thing real quick…gone head and put TITANIC back in the rotation’.” A tweet read, “Bad timing.” A person commented, “Horrible.”

As per the report, Titanic was listed on Netflix’s July movie list before the Titanic was reported missing.  It further said that film licencing deals are struck far in advance of the release date. Netflix’s original article was published on June 8 and was updated on June 21.

Titanic is currently available on Prime Video. The Titanic sank in the North Atlantic Ocean on her first voyage in April 1912 after colliding with an iceberg, killing around 1,500 passengers and crew. The wreckage was found in 1985 and it inspired James Cameron, a diving enthusiast, to make Titanic.
