Australian tennis player Nick Kyrgios has withdrawn from this month’s US Open as he recovers from injury, organizers said Thursday. Following knee surgery in January, Kyrgios has only played once in 2023 and a wrist problem has caused him to withdraw from Wimbledon as well as ATP tournaments in Washington, Toronto and Cincinnati.
Kyrgios has only played one official single match this season, a defeat in June in Stuttgart, Germany. Last year, the 28-year-old reached the quarter-finals of the US Open after knocking out then-world number one Daniil Medvedev. He was knocked out in the final eight by Russian 27th seed Karen Khachanov and exited the tournament visibly distraught.
Soon later, he pulled out of Wimbledon, citing a wrist injury. Kyrgios had his finest run at one of the sport’s four most major events in 2022, finishing runner-up to Novak Djokovic at the All England Club.
Then, a year ago, Kyrgios had his deepest run at Flushing Meadows, reaching the quarterfinals. He defeated reigning champion and No. 1 seed Daniil Medvedev in the fourth round before losing to Karen Khachanov in five sets.
Due to a left knee injury that required arthroscopic surgery, the 28-year-old Australian started the year 2023 by skipping the Australian Open.
He also did not play in the French Open. Kyrgios has dropped in the ATP rankings as a result of his absence and he is now ranked 92.
