A mass shooting at the Kansas City Chiefs’ Super Bowl victory rally on Wednesday left one person dead and twenty-one injured, many of them children. The incident caused panic among the massive crowds of fans.
According to the police, the gunshots occurred at a garage near the station toward the end of the victory rally following a parade, Reuters reported.
During a news conference, Police Chief Stacey Graves stated that three people had been arrested and are being investigated in connection with the incident outside Union Station, a landmark in the city. Graves said that investigators had yet to uncover the reason for the shooting.
During a news briefing, Fire Department Chief Ross Grundyson stated that at least 22 people were shot, one of whom died. He further stated that 15 of the wounded suffered life-threatening injuries.
Graves acknowledged reports stating that some fans may have helped pursue and catch at least one of the suspects. Investigators are actively reviewing video evidence from this incident.
She said as per AP, “I’m angry at what happened today. The people who came to this celebration should expect a safe environment.”
All of the Chiefs’ players, coaches, and staff that attended the victory rally were confirmed to be safe, according to a statement released by the NFL team.
A spokesperson from Children’s Mercy Kansas City stated that the hospital treated 12 rally attendees, 11 of them were minors. Nine people received gunshot wounds. However, during the press conference, Police Chief Graves confirmed that no children had been hurt, according to Reuters.
