Padma Shri Dr. Ashok Panagariya dies due to post Covid complications, President pays tribute

Dr. Ashok Panagariya, a renowned neurologist and Padma Shri awardee, died on Friday due to post-Covid complications at the age of 71. Dr. Ashok had been on a ventilator for many days. According to the hospital where he was being treated, his health condition became worse over the last two days and he breathed his last on Friday.

The death of Dr. Ashok was condoled by famous personalities including Prime Minister Narendra Modi who called him an “outstanding neurologist”. Taking to microblogging site Twitter, the prime minister said,”Dr. Ashok Panagariya made a mark as an outstanding neurologist. His pioneering work in the medical field will benefit generations of doctors and researchers. Saddened by his demise…Om Shanti”

The President of India, Ram Nath Kovind also paid a tribute to Dr. Ashok and recognised the doctor’s contribution to medical education and neuro-care in rural areas. “With the demise of Dr. Ashok Panagariya, we lost an eminent neurologist who made rich contribution through his clinical and academic work. Recipient of Padma Shri, he left lasting impact in medical education & neuro-care in rural areas…” the president said.

Among other political leaders, Rajasthan’s Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot called the death of Dr. Ashok a personal loss for him and his family and said that he had family relations with the deceased doctor. Gehlot also recognised the important role Dr. Ashok played during the coronavirus pandemic in Rajasthan.

Some other politicians from Rajasthan, including former CM Vasundhra Raje and BJP’s Satish Poonia also expressed grief at the doctor’s demise.
