PAN cardholders have been reminded by the Income Tax Department to finish the required pan to Aadhaar link process by December 31, 2025, failing which the card will no longer be functional. The department states that people will not be able to utilise their PAN for important financial and tax-related operations if they have not finished the Aadhaar-PAN card link within the allotted time. December 31, 2025 is the deadline for completing the PAN to Aadhaar connection.
Before continuing with the linking process, taxpayers who have not yet linked their PAN and Aadhaar must pay a late fee of ₹1,000. However, PAN holders who used an Aadhaar enrolment ID to obtain their PAN card after October 1, 2024, are immune from the penalty and can finish the linking process for free up until the deadline. The Income Tax Department has warned that unlinked PANs will become inactive if nothing is done before December 31, 2025, with only a few days left.
As previously reported by Hindustan Times, defaulters may experience disruptions in services that necessitate the use of the PAN, such as financial transactions and tax filings, in addition to the PAN becoming unusable. The Income Tax Department has reaffirmed that the connection requirement is mandatory. “For existing PAN holders, who were allotted PAN on or before 01-07-2017 it is mandatory to link PAN with Aadhaar. The Link Aadhaar service is available to individual taxpayers (both registered and unregistered on e-Filing Portal),” the official income tax website read.
