Patient dies after being bitten by rat in Mumbai civic hospital

Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) officials confirmed that a 24-year old patient died on Wednesday at a civic hospital in suburban Ghatkopar after being bitten by a rat near his eyes.

The officials informed that the patient was suffering from liver disease related to alcohol consumption. They further stated that since the day of his admission in Rajawadi Hospital his condition was quite critical.

A relative of the patient on Tuesday alleged that a rat had bitten the victim near his eyes when he was admitted to the ICU of the hospital. The person further encouraged the Mumbai Mayor Kishori Pednekar to order a probe into the issue.

According to the officials, the patient was brought to the hospital when he was in an unconscious state. The management of the hospital agreed to the rat bite incident, however, they citied that injuries of the patient were ‘superficial’ and that the patient eye was not affected.

On the rat biting incident, the Dean of the hospital, Dr Vidya Thakur on Tuesday responded that they have taken certain rodent repellent measures and will take utmost care to avoid such incident further.

On the other hand, BJP Lok Sabha member from Mumbai North East Manoj Kotak condemned the Shiv Sena ruled BMC over the incident. He expressed, “The BMC is said to be the Asia’s largest civic corporation, but it does not have enough measures to protect patients from mice. The family at the receiving end is in shock.” Mr. Kotak’s constituency covers Ghatkopar where the hospital is located.
