Premier League set to make huge cricket-style change to VAR from next season

Following all of the controversial calls made this season, the Premier League announced that significant changes would be made to the VAR system starting next season. The use and utilization of VAR continue to polarize individuals. Following a series of errors in the Premier League, the refereeing system has come under severe criticism.

First, there was Liverpool’s controversial goal against Tottenham Hotspur that was disallowed for offside. Then there were two different situations involving Arsenal, both of which concerned whether the ball went out of play before goals they conceded against Newcastle and West Ham.

More recently as well, there have been questions raised over the decision to deny Liverpool a penalty against Arsenal for what seemed to be a handball.

The Premier League will be changing its own VAR system by taking inspiration from cricket’s DRS system, as the number of controversial calls has been increasing.

A major change in the method could take place next season when Premier League referees are allowed to explain VAR decisions to fans, according to Daily Mail reports.  This will be an effort to mirror DRS in cricket, where the third umpire sends every observation he makes to the on-field umpire and the public every step of the way, allowing for better transparency.
