Years after its release, Priyadarshan’s popular comedy Hulchul has unexpectedly come under scrutiny. The film, widely remembered for its humour and ensemble cast, is now at the centre of a debate following actor Arshad Warsi’s recent comments about his experience on the project.
Arshad, in an earlier interview, described his time working on Hulchul as “bad,” stating that the role he was offered turned out to be far smaller than what he had initially expected. He explained that he felt disappointed after realising the difference between being projected as a key friend in the narrative and eventually playing a more sidelined character. However, Arshad also clarified that he did not entirely blame Priyadarshan, suggesting the filmmaker may not have been aware of the situation.
Responding to these remarks, Priyadarshan shared his reaction in an interview with Mid-Day. The director admitted that he was deeply upset after reading Arshad’s comments and said the accusations came as a shock. He recalled a conversation with the actor after the film’s release, during which Arshad had reportedly expressed happiness over the appreciation he received for his performance.
Priyadarshan further stated that Hulchul was a box-office success and said it hurt him when Arshad later referred to the film as a flop. According to the filmmaker, there was no reason for dissatisfaction, making the criticism particularly painful.
Despite the disagreement, both continue to remain busy professionally. Priyadarshan is preparing for the release of Haiwaan, starring Akshay Kumar and Saif Ali Khan, scheduled to arrive in cinemas in 2026.
