Priyamani addresses pay gap in films; says she charges what she deserves and knows her worth

Actor Priyamani, known for her powerful performances across South Indian cinema, opened up about pay disparity in the film industry and shared how she has learned to value her worth instead of comparing salaries with male co-stars.

National Award-winning actor Priyamani has carved a niche for herself across multiple film industries Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam with her strong screen presence and versatile roles. In a recent interview, the actor spoke candidly about the long-debated issue of pay parity in films and revealed how she has come to terms with it over the years.

Acknowledging that the gap between male and female actors’ pay still exists, Priyamani said she prefers focusing on her market value rather than the comparison. “It is true that women are paid less, but that’s okay. I believe whatever your market value is, you ask for it and you’ll get paid accordingly. I know my worth and I charge what I deserve. I won’t ask for an unnecessary hike,” she shared.

The actor also reflected on how work culture differs between film industries in the North and the South. “In the South, if shooting starts at 8 am, it actually starts at 8. Here, when you say 8, people usually arrive at that time. The working style is quite different,” she added with a smile.

Priyamani was recently seen in the Malayalam thriller Officer on Duty and Revathy’s The Good Wife. Up next, she will share the screen with Vijay in Jana Nayagan, the actor’s final film before his political entry, and reprise her role alongside Manoj Bajpayee in The Family Man season 3.
