Popular Bengali actress Rituparna Sengupta was reportedly attacked by a hostile crowd during an anti-rape protest in the city. According to witnesses, bottles were thrown at her car, and she faced physical aggression. Despite the chaos, a small group of people, including some journalists and fellow actors, helped her escape unharmed, though others sustained injuries.
Many individuals participated in the late-night demonstration, including well-known figures from the Bengali film industry. It was nearly midnight when Sengupta reached the spot. Tensions increased quickly after her arrival as several demonstrators yelled at her to “go back” and “shame.” Journalist Atanu Roy, who was there with the actress, claimed that the crowd turned hostile very quickly. Bottles were thrown at Sengupta’s car by protesters as she tried to run away. Roy explained the abrupt change in mood, saying that everyone was taken aback by the circumstances. As the hostility increased, some in the audience tried to hit the actress.
Despite the rising hostility, a small group intervened, shielding Sengupta and helping her to escape. Several people, including a journalist, were injured during the chaos. One journalist reportedly suffered a swollen face after being repeatedly elbowed in the jaw.
Sengupta’s car was aggressively damaged as the crowd hammered on the windows, refusing to hear what she had to say. The actress barely made it out of the scene without more injury.
