For the past year, it has been widely assumed that if Georginio Wijnaldum and Liverpool cannot agree on a contract extension, he will join FC Barcelona as a free agent. It’s no secret that Barcelona manager Ronald Koeman wants to reunite with his Dutch colleague, and Gini appears to be of the same mind.
With no deal made with Gini bidding farewell to the club and its fans on the final day of the Premier League season, it was a fair bet that he would sign a contract with Barcelona any day now. But, in football, nothing is ever that straightforward.
PSG is making a late effort to capture free agency midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum. Despite signing a three-year contract with Barcelona at the end of May, Wijnaldum is apparently considering a move to Paris. PSG’s offer appears to be more attractive than Barca’s. Bayern Munich has also expressed interest in the Dutch international.
“Gini has a tremendous feeling of space and can get to the goal incredibly well from midfield,” stated Koeman at the time. “He has the potential to make a significant contribution to the team.”
Wherever he ends up, it appears like Wijnaldum will receive his money’s worth and then some, and he will almost probably sign with a club that will give him an opportunity to compete for a major trophy, which makes his probable departure easier to bear.
Wijnaldum’s contract with Liverpool is set to end on June 30. He was with the Reds for five seasons, winning the Champions League in 2019 and the Premier League the following year.
Where do you think Gini will end up? Will he go for a better salary or prefer the opportunity to play with Koeman?
