Amid the ‘rail-roko’ stir in Punjab against the contentious farm laws, the loss suffered by the Indian Railways has already crossed an estimated Rs 1,200 crore. More than 2,200 freight rakes carrying essential commodities could not be operated due to the continued blockages at sections of tracks in Punjab, and approximately 1,350 trains have been forced to be either cancelled or diverted. Last month, Union Railways Minister Piyush Goyal had written to Punjab CM seeking assurance about the safety of tracks.
