Rafael Nadal drops out of top 100 for first time in 20 years as Novak Djokovic reclaims world no.1 ranking

After winning his men’s record 23rd Grand Slam championship at the French Open, Novak Djokovic regained the world number one position from Carlos Alcaraz, while Rafa Nadal fell out of the top 100 for the first time in 20 years.

Djokovic, 36, jumped two spots in the rankings following his triumph in Paris at the weekend as he started his record-extending 388th week at the summit on Monday. He won against Spaniard Alcaraz in the competition’s semifinals.

Daniil Medvedev, who dropped out in the first round, also slipped one spot to third, while Alcaraz rose to second. Casper Ruud, the runner-up in Roland Garros, remained in fourth spot.

The 14-time French Open winner Nadal has had a season spoiled by injuries and hasn’t competed since January due to a hip injury sustained during the Australian Open. Due to his long absence from the race, the 37-year-old’s rating has fallen from 15th to 136th. He had surgery earlier this month and his recovery time will likely be 5 months.

Iga Swiatek kept her top place in the women’s rankings after successfully defending her French Open title. She has been at the top of the rankings since April 2022, when Ash Barty retired.
