Rajkumar Hirani plans AI short film; sparks debate on future of storytelling

Filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani is looking to experiment with Artificial Intelligence in storytelling. In a recent interaction with Variety India, the director shared that he is planning to make a short film using AI, revealing that he already has a story in mind and hopes to bring it to life in the coming months.

Hirani described AI as a “great tool” that filmmakers should begin embracing. According to him, the technology can help fill creative gaps and make certain processes more cost-effective. However, he clarified that making a full-length AI film is not as simple as avoiding physical sets. “It’s as consuming and requires effort,” he said, adding that his proposed project will likely be a four-to-five-minute short, allowing him to learn and experiment while writing it.

His comments quickly ignited conversations online. While some social media users criticised the move, calling AI a “curse to creativity” and arguing that it should not replace human art, others suggested that the filmmaker may simply be curious about new technology and eager to explore fresh formats.

Hirani’s last directorial venture was Dunki, starring Shah Rukh Khan and Taapsee Pannu. Released in December 2023, the film tackled the theme of illegal immigration and clashed at the box office with Salaar: Part 1 – Ceasefire. As debate continues, Hirani’s AI experiment could mark a new chapter in his filmmaking journey.
