Actor Rajpal Yadav secured interim relief from the Delhi High Court on Monday, which granted him bail until March 18 in the ₹9 crore cheque bounce case related to his 2012 film Ata Pata Laapata. However, even as the legal setback eased temporarily, fresh claims by his legal team suggest that the dispute may not be ending anytime soon.
Speaking to ETimes after the court’s order, Rajpal’s lawyer Bhaskar Upadhyay alleged that the complainant’s approach was driven by “malicious intent” rather than an effort to recover money. According to him, the objective appeared to be imprisonment instead of settlement. He claimed that despite Rajpal’s willingness to repay dues, the complainant insisted on executing the decree through jail time.
Bhaskar further clarified that ₹2.5 crore has already been arranged and the remaining amount is being settled. He stressed that the ₹5 crore in question was an investment made by the production house in the film and not a personal loan taken by the actor. To support his commitment, Rajpal has reportedly submitted property documents valued at over ₹40 crore before the court as collateral.
Describing the actor as a “family man” unfamiliar with legal technicalities, Bhaskar added that Rajpal intends to comply with court directions. His brother, Chandrapal Yadav, expressed optimism after the bail order, saying better days lie ahead.
