Rajpal Yadav’s bail plea adjourned by Delhi High Court in cheque bounce case; lawyer says ₹2.5 crore already paid

Actor Rajpal Yadav will have to wait longer for relief as the Delhi High Court adjourned his bail hearing to Monday in a cheque bounce matter. The actor is currently lodged in Tihar Jail after surrendering on February 5.

The case dates back to 2010 when Rajpal borrowed ₹5 crore from Murali Projects Pvt Ltd to finance his directorial venture Ata Pata Laapata. The film failed at the box office, triggering a prolonged financial dispute. In 2018, a magisterial court convicted him under the Negotiable Instruments Act and sentenced him to six months in prison.

Speaking outside court, his lawyer Bhaskar Upadhyay said the actor has already repaid ₹2.5 crore out of the original amount. He added that around ₹1 crore had earlier been deposited with the registry and a cheque of ₹25 lakh was also presented. According to the lawyer, the outstanding sum grew from ₹5 crore to ₹11 crore over time, and they are prepared to deposit further assistance received.

During earlier proceedings, Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma had observed that the actor’s imprisonment stemmed from failure to honour his commitments under a settlement. The court noted that the consequences followed from non compliance with agreed terms.

Rajpal, known for films such as Mujhse Shaadi Karogi and Bhool Bhulaiyaa, now faces liability of nearly ₹9 crore. The High Court is expected to decide on the matter in the upcoming hearing.
